About Adirondack Naturals

Adirondack Naturals was founded by Richard Purdue in Lake George, NY.  Richard, a skilled rustic furniture maker and log home builder, shifted into crafting solid wood doors after noticing a steep decline in quality products available to the average consumer.  Starting the business in 1999 with his two sons, Matt & Chris, they have been on a mission to offer top quality, handmade doors that are affordable and made in the USA.

“For over 20 years our family has been dedicated to producing quality products to improve the look and function of your home. From the smallest camp to the largest home or business, we are committed to delivering superior quality doors for your project.”

About Our Product

We build all our doors of solid natural wood. Most wood doors are constructed of wood veneers (thin wood skins) glued to a cheap plywood or particle board core with adhesives typically containing formaldehyde and other chemicals.  If you drilled a hole through one of these fake doors you would find almost no real wood. That method of construction can technically be called solid wood but it is certainly not what most people would expect.  They are technically wood, but definitely not natural.

Our doors are constructed of  kiln dried, furniture grade woods and handcrafted using mortise and tenon joinery at all frame joints,  much the way they would have been constructed 200 years ago.  They are constructed to stand up  to  use by modern families who can be every bit as abusive as redcoats or hostile indians.

Our doors can be built to any size you need.  We can modify our standard designs or work with a sketch or picture you provide.  There are no limitations here, we will build your door you want your way.

Starting from kiln-dried rough lumber sourced at local mills, we joint, plane, sand and shape all the materals to size. Each door is assembled by hand using modified mortise and tenon jointery along with high strenght glues and nails to ensure we are providing the strongest product possible. Because each door is hand-made we can easily accomadate custom sizes and styles. Each door is then hand sanded and prepared for finishing. We then manually apply the desired finish and clear coat to all sides of the door to insure it is completley sealed and protected. The doors are then hung in a jamb custom sized to fit your home, no worrying about adding jamb extensions or conforming to standard sizies. Once a door is complete it is ready for pick up at our shop or crated for shipping to all 50 states.

Benefits of Solid Wood Doors

One of the biggest benefits of a solid wood door is how great it looks. Its traditional style can provide much more curb appeal to your home than other materials. As a natural and extremely versatile building material, wooden doors come in a far wider range of designs than their veneer, fibreglass or metal counterparts. The craftsmanship is clearly visible, which adds to the overall appeal. This appeal goes beyond looks. Wooden doors bring about a traditional feel to your home and are an excellent alternative to incite a sense refinement.

Their versatility means they can be tailored (in size, style of wood, and design) specifically to your home and aesthetic. As no two pieces of wood are exactly the same, your wooden door will be completely unique to you. The benefits of timber doors mean that whether you prefer light wood, dark wood, painted surfaces, tight grain, wide grain, simplicity or intricate design work, anything is possible.

Another key benefit of wooden doors is external security. Wooden doors are incredibly strong, and developments in their design and construction over their hundreds of years of manufacture mean they can outlast some of their counterparts. They are one of the few door materials that can be repaired, as wood is malleable and easy to work with. This means a wooden door will offer you great security and reliability over its long life.

All of these things are important, but a wooden door benefits you in another way as well. Wood retains fantastic insulation properties, and with minimal maintenance, can improve your home’s thermal efficiency. The properties of the material mean that warmth is kept in, and noise is kept out more so than with most other types of door. And because our wood comes from a sustainable source, it’s environmentally friendly, too.
