Terminology and Lingo

  • Also know as the “Frame”, is the assembly that the door attaches too. The assembly mounts in your R.O. (Rough Opening)

  • The R.O., also referred to as the “Rough Opening”, is the untrimmed opening for a window or a door. An industry standard R.O. typically leaves about 1/4” of space between your door jambs and the R.O. for shimming.

  • This is the center portion of a door that falls between rails and styles. A door can have multiple raised panels, depending on how the door is constructed. This panel is shaped to profile that can be inserted into a mortised rail or style. Typically, this type of panel is shaped so that the face sit flush or higher than the door rails.

  • This type of panel is also known as “Shaker” or “Recessed” panel. This type of panel is designed to be the same thickness as the style/rail mortise. When assembled, the panel will sit lower than the rail and look recessed.

  • This type of door is designed and build to be an entrance door that can stand up to weather and outside conditions. An Exterior door should have a sweep, weatherstripping, threshold, swing stops, lockset and efficient glass. Exterior doors will range in thickness from 1-5/8” to 2” and need proper finished to maintain their ability to combat weather conditions.

  • An interior door is designed to be in a controlled indoor environment. Interior doors will rarely have weatherstripping or glass, but it is possible. Interior doors will likely have privacy or passage locksets and thickness will be around 1-5/8”.

  • A door threshold, also known as the “Sill” or “Saddle”, is the horizontal floor piece on an exterior door that you cross over when you pass through a door.

  • A door rail is the horizontal structural member of a door. Rails form the doors top and bottom edges and provide rigidity and strength to your door.

  • A Stile is the vertical structural members of a door. They make up the left and right sides of your door. Stiles are bored for locksets and deadbolts.

  • A door slab is a door without the frame or hinges. Door slabs can be bored for locksets and deadbolts, which Adirondack Naturals will perform, only if the lockset is purchased from us.

  • Grilles are mounted in front of and behind the glass. The Grill is a decorative grid pattern that divides a larger piece of glass into multiple sections, usually to improve aesthetics.

Important Terminology for Placing Orders

  • MDF Core is how most manufacturers get away with selling their products as “Solid Wood”. Technically, it is solid wood, but the core of the door is made with MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard). MDF is basically a pressured homogenization of sawdust and glue. This type of construction lacks in form, function and finish.

These companies don’t openly discuss their construction techniques either. They are preying on the average consumers lack of knowledge on the craft. Our job is to educate the consumer and not play a smoke and mirrors game with your hard earned money. After going through some of these other terms, our hope is to help you develop a keen eye for spotting some of these garbage products.

  • Veneer is a technique that many manufacturers use to mask what the door is really constructed of.. Junk. Think back to the days of 1980’s kitchen countertops, faux stone or wood grain were popular selections. Those products were a laminated/veneer over Particle Board or MDF. In the 80’s this fad started with manufactured homes and worked its way into every aspect of the kitchen industry, including cabinets.

Fast forward to 2024… simply stated, it’s a backhanded way of hiding the structure of their doors and calling the product “solid wood”. It’s a shortcut construction technique, utilized by most mass production door companies and some smaller companies are now following suit.

  • Plywood is a little different than MDF, but as inferior. This is an engineered product like MDF, but instead of a pressured homogenization of sawdust and glue, they are substituting cross laminated wood fibers. If you see the term plywood anywhere, run Forrest, run!

  • Laminate; See Veneer. Same process with a higher quality substrate. This is like comparing a faux Omega to a faux Rolex.. when you are done, you still have a product that your house will be embarrassed to wear in public.

  • If you see Core Materials referenced, you are dealing with an engineered wood product. It could be the Stiles and Rails or it could be the panels themselves. But, you are dealing with engineered products instead of the real thing: Furniture Grade - kiln-dried - Solid Wood.

Educational Industry Lingo and Jargon

  • A doorway arch is an architectural feature that frames a doorway. The shape of a doorway arch can vary greatly depending on function and style. Typical Archtops use the slab width as the radius for the arch

  • This is a a type of arch top that may not follow a radius at all! Much like an eyebrow, the arch is not a partial circle and sometimes doesn’t follow a radius at all….

  • A broken arch is an architectural design term, referring to an arch, often found in doorways, windows, or architectural details, that does not form a continuous, uninterrupted curve. Unlike an Eyebrow Arch - the Broken Arch typically has a radius and uniform arc.

  • This panel style features a flat centre and square edges, with minimal detailing or profiling. Shaker panels are symmetrical and shy away from intricate trim and shaping

  • The door casing is the outside trim that finalizes the door install. This can be a standard brick mold or can be as intricate as desired

  • A pre-hung door is unit consisting of everything needed to install in your opening. A slab door is simply just the door. A slab door is included in pre-hung doors, along with the jamb set, hinges, threshold and anything else necessary to install in your home.
